Hi friend, Our food is undoubtedly one of the most important areas that we should focus on detoxing. In detoxing your food, I don't mean going to pickup a juice cleanse “detox” or just eating salad. What I am referring to is creating a lifestyle in which we are regularly eating clean, wholesome, non-toxic foods as our norm.

In our American food culture today, where we are bombarded with fast food and microwave meals, it can be frustrating and difficult to find the path back to nutrient-dense, health-building foods rather than health-destroying foods. This is why it's important to know why we are really choosing healthy living and to be on the journey together. Each step we take in the direction of pure ingredients, we are increasing our health, preventing or reversing disease, and affecting much needed change within our food system.

Today, I want to share with you 3 ways to detox your food.

Remember, think “phase in to phase out”. It's not about having a huge list of "what not to eat", but rather abundance thinking of all the amazing, colorful, foods that we GET to consume that are clean fuel and medicine to our bodies. Let's nourish the bodies that God has given us for this life He has blessed us with!

When we focus on adding in more good things, the not-so-good things will naturally fall away in time— allowing us to create and sustain an eating lifestyle that is enjoyable rather than super abrupt or burdening.

3 Ways to Detox Your Food: 1. Stock up on organic olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, + ghee. Soybean, vegetable, and canola oils, margarine, and shortening are all fats that do more harm than good in our bodies. Fats— healthy fats— definitely have their place and are super important to be consuming each and every day! We just want to make sure to be cooking and infusing with the good ones. Organic olive, coconut, avocado oils and ghee are great healthy fats to keep stocked in your kitchen.

2. Choose quality meat. This is a really huge one. I highly recommend adding the documentary, Food Inc. to your queue this week as it explains much of the importance of choosing meats that are naturally raised, nutritious, and free of pesticides, hormones, and chemicals that we want to keep out of our bodies.

Choose organic and grass-fed meats.

I'm all about finding companies that are making healthy living easy, accessible, and affordable. Butcher Box is the company that our family really enjoys getting our meat from. As Americans, we tend to eat a lot more meat than we really need and have a higher meat portion than veggies. I recommend filling your plate with more plant-based sides so that you can still enjoy meat (if you eat meat) but a smaller, quality portion.

Here are a few places to source quality meat for a good price—

Butcher Box

Joey and I really like their grass-fed steaks and wild-caught salmon that's the most vibrant pink from Alaska that you can tell is PACKED with nutrients when you see it! We also love their deals on organic chicken.

Thrive Market

Thrive Market also has quality meats that you can have shipped straight to your doorstep as well. Get 40% OFF your first order on Thrive Market! Thrive is an awesome one-stop-shop for a lot of pantry staples, non-toxic toiletries and cleaners, and even meat. They regularly give free gifts to their members too! I'm like a kid at Christmas anticipating our Thrive order each month!!

Aldi

If you have an Aldi near you, they are a great place to go to stock up on organic grass-fed beef and organic chicken. They also recently started carrying whole organic chickens which is definitely the cheapest way to buy organic chicken. You just have to break it down, but then you're left with the organic bones to make bone broth from which is incredible for your health, especially gut health!

3. Choose organic produce. Choosing organic produce is important because conventional, non-organic produce contains pesticides which aren't good for our bodies and can especially affect our gut. Our gut health is so vital as it controls much of our immunity, mood, hormones, and more. Show your gut some love by choosing organic to detox from pesticides and at least avoiding the EWG's Dirty Dozen of conventional produce. Read more about the importance of choosing organic here.

Here's 12 things to make sure to buy organic in:

  1. Strawberries

  2. Spinach

  3. Kale

  4. Nectarines

  5. Apples

  6. Grapes

  7. Peaches

  8. Cherries

  9. Pears

  10. Tomatoes

  11. Celery

  12. Potatoes

Quick Tip: If you have an Aldi near you, check them out for organic produce. The one near us has really been upping their game in the organic department which is SO EXCITING!! Aldi has unbeatable deals on low prices.
