3 Healthier Sugar Swaps

Updated: Jan 10

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links and if you go through them to make a purchase I will earn a commission. I only share about companies that I truly believe in.

Today, I want to share with you some of my favorite healthier sweetener alternatives! Sugar can hurt our health when overconsumed. Here's a little info about the impact of sugar on our bodies + some tips for choosing healthier options especially this time of year when we like to bake and enjoy some holiday treats. :)

We’ve all heard that too much highly processed, refined sugar can have devastating effects on our metabolism and contribute to all sorts of diseases. Here are a few reasons why:

  • In the 18th century, the average sugar consumption per person was less than 5 pounds. In our 21st century, the average sugar consumption is approximately 180 pounds.

  • Too much sugar in the diet leads to countless issues such as obesity, depression, and rapid aging.

  • When we consume too much sugar, it can cause resistance to the hormone insulin, which can lead to diseases like metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes.

  • An excess amount of sugar can have a devastating effect on your metabolism, which is now known to lead to cancer.

  • Sugar is highly addictive because after ingestion it causes a huge release of dopamine in your brain.

What has continued to fascinate me and fuel my passion for helping others is learning just how HUGELY impactful lifestyle changes are in helping to heal our bodies and prevent harmful diseases. Today, through the study of epigenetics, we know that even if a person has a genetic history of health diseases in their family, simply improving food and lifestyle changes can largely prevent the continuation of poor health. Limiting sugar to decrease inflammation in the body is a major game changer.

“Changing diet is one of easiest prevention strategies that can potentially save a lot of suffering and money.” —Dr. Custodia Garcia-Jimenez

There are much better options that I want to share with you for when you enjoy sweet treats in moderation. Limiting your sugar intake and choosing QUALITY when you're treating yourself helps to preserve your body!

Here are a few of my favorite options! Replace white processed sugar with coconut sugar in your baked goods to lessen the load on your blood sugar to keep your body feeling more stable and energized.

1. Coconut Sugar

from the sap of cut flower buds of the coconut palm

  • Same sweetness as table sugar

  • Look for labels that say coconut sugar, coconut crystals, or coconut palm sugar + organic

  • Has low glycemic index and contains some nutrients and fiber

2. Pure Maple Syrup

from the sap of sugar, red, or black maple trees

  • About 3 times sweeter than table sugar

  • Buy organic pure-grade maple syrup

  • Lower fructose content than table sugar, but enjoy in moderation as it's still sugar

3. Honey

from the bees

  • Slightly sweeter than table sugar

  • Buy raw, local, and organic honey

  • Can help boost immune system, lessen seasonal allergies, and soothe sore throats

It's small changes over time that support and sustain a healthier lifestyle. Each time we increase the quality of the foods we are eating, it makes a difference in our bodies and the quality of our lives. I want to encourage you to pick even just one of these to add to your pantry as a healthier swap for you and your family. Soon, like me, you'll not even remember being without coconut sugar or maple syrup because they're SO good!!

I've included links to Thrive Market where I like to shop to save LOTS of money every month on natural and organic foods! Costco and Walmart also have great options if you have those places to shop locally! I buy our maple syrup from Costco and Coconut Sugar from Walmart! But, Thrive is another budget-friendly and convenient option!
